The delay people are searching for is the one in the 27 August 2026 Letter From The Chairman: a 2026 plan became Q2 2027.
The current delay explanation is attributed to the official chairman letter. Older missed targets are a separate, secondary-source timeline; they do not establish additional reasons for the present window.
The letter, in order
Roberts writes that CitizenCon 2024 announced a 2026 ship window, with a plan to release in Q4 around IAE. He then says he does not want to launch his spiritual successor to Wing Commander into the attention around GTA 6. After looking at early 2027, the letter says Q2 is a better time for Squadron 42.
The same letter says a small number of original backers and long-time Star Citizen creators would play on 9 and 10 October, and that a specific release date would come shortly afterwards. The 12 October weekly confirms the Manchester session and does not publish that day.
Earlier slips, kept separate
The Star Citizen Wiki release-date page records a longer chain: an early public target, a 2016 delay, a CitizenCon 2953 feature-complete claim on 22 October 2023, a 2026 hint at CitizenCon 2024, then this 2026 move to Q2 2027. I treat that chain as a secondary timeline. The only sentence I will quote as the current reason is the chairman letter.
Wikipedia notes a mid-2019 hope of a beta in Q2 2020 that did not happen, and a December 2020 decision to stop publishing dates for a while. Those are history, not the 2027 window.
Questions I keep getting
Is Squadron 42 delayed because of GTA 6?
The letter says the team did not want to launch into the GTA 6 attention window, and that Q2 2027 looked better. That is the official reason on record.
Did the October playtest set a day?
Not in the 12 October 2026 weekly. The window is still Q2 2027.
